2013 Cinnabar is Gemtree Wines first GSM. The 3 varieties are well know throughout the old world and new and all blended in dierent proportions to create a myriad of styles. We have looked to a savoury yet fruit driven style, perfect for easy drinking and free flowing conversations. Gently crushed, open fermented separately on skins for up to 20 days each, pressed in new and old Puncheons (500L) barrels for maturation. Each parcel was racked off their lees just prior to bottling to enhance the texture. Cinnabar was bottled without filtration.

2012 Uncut

2012 Uncut Shiraz

Vineyard selection is critical with each vintage of Uncut. We select the sites that display consistent high quality, concentration and finesse. The vine age ranges from 20-50 years. Fermentation occurs naturally in open fermenters, pressing o skins once the fermentation is completed, which may take up to 20 days. Ageing occurs in 100% French oak barrels ranging in size from puncheons (500L) to barriques (225L) for 18 months maturation. As with all Gemtree reds, minimal racking occurs in this time, so the wine can be aged on its lees, building mouthfeel and texture and allowing sulphur additions to be kept to a minimum to showcase the true character of the wine.

10obsidian2

2010 Obsidian Shiraz

We commenced our reserve program 9 years ago and I believe the 2010 shows everything a reserve wine should. Great vintages and great vineyards speak volumes given the latitude and the 2010 Obsidian does exactly that. Matured in new French oak for 3 years, the 2010 deserves the title of Gemtree’s flagship wine - dark and powerful, yet restrained and poised.

Bottles_Obsidian

2008 Obsidian Shiraz

Obsidian is hand crafted wine — we grow the grapes specifically, hand select the ultimate sections in the vineyard, vinify separately and then only the best barrels make the cut, ensuring only 1% of our total shiraz production makes the Obsidian grade. Winemaker Mike Brown's philosophy is simple — minimal intervention across all stages of the winemaking process.

09_whitelees

2009 White Lees Shiraz

Winemaker, Mike Brown was emptying some freshly fermented white wine out of new French oak barrels. Left behind in the barrels were the remnants of yeast called “lees”. Normally the lees are emptied out before the next wine is put in.

Whilst rolling the first barrels to empty them, Mike tasted the lees and found they had extraordinary flavour. They were fluffy, crunchy, and looked very "alive" and healthy. He decided to transfer an outstanding parcel of unoaked Shiraz into the French oak barrels on top of the white lees. Over the next 36 months the experiment began to take shape, and what has evolved is an incredibly unique beast!!

The white lees have acted as a preserving agent, protecting this wine from normal aging characteristics, hence with the extraordinary quality of the 2009 vintage combined with the lees natural preserving abilities we have a wine that is truly remarkable.
