Prior to starting Gemtree in 1998, Andrew had worked with the Shell Company in Melbourne in a range of roles. He joined the family business in 1997 and since that time he has taken over the management of this business and has been responsible for sales in export markets such as USA, Canada, China, New Zealand, Europe and Asia. Whilst building the Gemtree brand Andrew became actively involved in the management of Mclaren Vale Grape Wine and Tourism Association, chairing it for 2 years up to November 2005. In 2008, he was appointed by the State Government as a delegate on the South Australian Wine Industry Council which is a peak industry partnership between industry and government, established to foster a strong viable wine industry within the state.
Since 2010, Andrew has devoted his time to developing a joint venture partnership with a Chinese family and he now travels to China about 12 weeks a year assisting with developing a national distribution platform for the Gemtree brand. A keen sportsman he is actively involved in weekly gym workouts, cycles and swims and has recently recommenced his competitive athletics career. He maximizes his time on the beach in summer by doing a few volunteer surf patrols for the Moana Surf Lifesaving club and competes in Masters State Titles for Surf Lifesaving. Above all, he is a passionate champion of Brand McLaren Vale and takes every opportunity he can to highlight the virtues of living and growing grapes in the region.
Along with Melissa Brown (his sister) Andrew has been a strong advocate of Gemtree’s push to build a Wetlands, develop a partnership with Greening Australia, farm Biodynamically, build a sustainable cellar door and operate the business more sustainably, to not only take a leadership role within the industry but ensure the next generation will have a strong viable business.
